“A NATURAL HIGH” AT THE PALM SPRINGS AERIAL TRAMWAY ($80.00)

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway on Mount Jacinto is a true adventure. It was the dream of a young electrical engineer named Francis F. Crocker to “go up there where it’s nice and cool.” Construction of the tramway was an engineering challenge and was soon labeled the “eighth wonder of the world” because of the ingenious use of helicopters in erecting four of the five supporting towers over a two-year period in the early 1960s. Some 20 years later, the tramway was designated an historical civil-engineering landmark. Additionally, the tri-level Mountain Station has stunning views of the valley and is evidence of the timeless design work of E. Stewart Williams, who was instrumental in the modernist movement and development of Palm Springs.
The rotating cable cars are the most advanced in the world (the only two in North America)—they guide passengers 2½ miles up the mountainside to a height of 8,516 feet using a push–pull method. Each ride up the hill to Mountain Station is met with a cable car on the opposite side of the cable returning to the Valley Station.
At the top of the Aerial Tramway, Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness offers 54 miles of hiking trails. Trails range from the awe-inspiring 5½-mile trek to the 10,804-foot peak of San Jacinto to the just over 1-mile-nature walk through picturesque Long Valley, located just behind the tram’s Mountain Station. For less-active guests, a continuous-reel movie about the building of the tram, 2 gift shops, 2 restaurants, and a lounge to enjoy lunch/dinner/refreshments and several viewing terraces are located at the Mountain Station. The trek to the top of the mountain is truly a singular experience!
